Ms. Penfold's Kindergarten

Hello Families, On Wednesday, June 24th we will be hosting our Kindergarten Celebration! The AM Class time will begin at 9:45am and the PM Class time will begin at 1:45pm. Students will come to school at their regular time. Our classes will be singing a few songs in the common area to begin. We will then move to our classroom to hand out our Kindergarten Certificates and collect their visual journal to take home. Afterwards, families are invited to take photos in our kindergarten hallway as we have created a very special and collaborative art experience. We are excited to share the beautiful artwork we have created in our "Kinder Garden." Families can then transition outside to take more photos with our balloon arch, as well as for Kindergarten students to enjoy a small treat to celebrate their year. Thank-you Parent Council for providing these treats for our Kindergarten students. Families can stay and visit until regular dismissal time if they would like. We are excited to ...

Looking Back... - Our letter of the week this week was Xx  - We created treasure maps with an X to mark the spot, and next week we will test out our classroom mapping skills by seeing if our friend can use our map to find out hidden treasure - We continued to observe the chicks and geese to watch them grow and change! - In math we continued on identifying and sorting 3D shapes by similar traits  Looking Forward... - FIELD TRIP: our field trip to the Farm Yard is happening next week Friday May 22nd, please send your kiddo with a snack, water bottle and any weather appropriate accessories they may need (rain coat, sunhat, sunscreen etc.)  - If you have not signed permission forms for the field trip, please have them back to me by Wednesday May 20th - Final Book Order: I have sent home our last book order of the year. Looking Back... - This week in kindergarten we got some special visitors!! Our eggs hatched and we have two baby chicks and as of yesterday, two baby geese as well - We spent a lot of time talking about, observing and sketching our new baby classmates  - The letter of the week was Qq for quilt, quack or queen - In math we started discussing 3D shapes and how they are different from 2D shapes, we went on a shape walk around the school to try and find spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders in real life Looking Forward... - Tuesday is Library day! Please send books back for exchange ☺ your kiddo gets to keep the book for ONE WEEk!!  Looking Back... - The letter of the week was Zz for Zoo and Zebra - We wrote letters to the zoo asking for some pets, ask your kindergartener what animal they "got" (ie. we made our own version of the book Dear Zoo) - We also did some zebra research and learned all about zebras, we created a fun fact page with an interesting fact we learned!  - In science we finished the five senses - With our buddies we celebrated there FINALLY being some sunshine and created a whole bunch of wild flowers for our "kinder garden" to brighten up the classroom - We got to spend lots of time outside getting fresh air and getting our wiggles out - For science we also have some special visitors joining us, right now they are just eggs!!  Looking Back... - This week in Kindergarten our letter of the week was Yy for Yak or Yoyo - We made a letter Y into a cute little yak drawing!! And made Yarn Monsters!  - It was also Earth Day, we talked about and brainstormed a few ideas on how we can help our community stay clean and healthy. Ask your kiddo what some of the ideas were ☺ - In math we finished up patterning, we are able to identify the core of a pattern, extend a pattern, label a pattern and create our own pattern using a variety of ideas like colours, shapes, pictures or stickers!  - We also finished our 5 senses science unit!!  Looking Back...  - Monday we had our school wide Pancake Breakfast!! What a fantastic way to come back after spring break, the students all got to enjoy some pancakes, and even some line dancing - The letter of the week this week was Ee for Easter, Elephant and Egg... we have started talking about vowels making two sounds, both long and short vowel sounds - In math we returned to patterning and practiced finding the core of a pattern and then extending  - We created pattern Easter Eggs - With our buddies we made stain glass window spring art!  Looking Back... - The letter of the week was Bb for Bear!  - We did bear research and learned all about bears. We drew scientific drawings, labelled them, read non-fiction books about bears, watched some videos and made a research page about a fact that we learned about bears - ask your student what their fact was!  - For math we have started problem solving, using pictures, numbers and words to solve a variety of math problems - We managed to do two letters this week and also did the letter Hh for Hibernate  - We also discussed how you can organize things by categories such as organizing animals by how they move and we played games moving like different animals - We met with our buddies and made shamrocks!  Looking Forward... - Tuesday is Library day (we missed this week so we will get new books next week) - Tuesday March 17th is St. Patricks Day, your child can wear green if they choose - There is NO SCHOOL Thursday March 19th or 20th for conferences, please ...

Looking Back... A quick little week we had again! - The letter of this week was Ll - We labelled the classroom, using our phonetic awareness to stretch and sound out different words!  Looking Back... What a busy week! - The letter of the week this week was Gg for groundhog!  - On Monday we listened to a story about Groundhog Day and talked about what it means, we looked out the window and brainstormed what we thought the groundhog would predict for this year!! We all thought he would say early spring, but he said 6 more weeks of winter - We made groundhog homes with cute little groundhogs as a fun craft - In math our number of the week was 9, we used pictures, numbers, and tens frames to represent the number 9 - We watched number blocks to introduce the number 9 and they made lots of math sentences that equalled 9 so we tried to make some too. Like 8 + 1 = 9 and 5 + 4 = 9  - We did a letter sort and organized words that did and did not start with the letter Gg into the right categories, some of us even used our knowledge of letters to sound out and label our work!!  - To kick off the Olympics we talked all about winter sports, sportsmanship and w...

 Looking Back... - The letter of the week last week was Nn for Narwhal! We read Narwhal and Jelly books and drew a narwhal - We did a letter sort to organize images that started with Mm and Nn, this helped us learn the difference between the sounds these two letters make - In math we worked on our knowledge of 2D shapes - With our buddies we made and labelled snowmen using lots of different 2D shapes - Using tiles, we built animals out of shapes as well - The letter of the week this week was Oo for Octopus and Olympics  Looking Forward... - Library day is Tuesday! Happy New Year!  Looking Back... - We have jumped right back into learning since the break!!  - The number of the week last week was 6, we represented six using pictures, number form, stickers and tens frames - For art we did a project using 6 sticks - ask your kiddo what they turned 6 sticks into, they had some really creative ideas!  - Last week's letter of the week was Ww for winter, we talked about what changes outside in winter and fun winter activities - We journaled "In winter I see...." using pictures and starting to sound out beginning letter sounds we labeled our drawings - The letter of the week this week was Mm - We read The Mitten and practiced sequencing a story by acting out the animals with headbands and cutting and gluing animal pictures in order - We finished patterning, creating our very own patterns on Mittens! - The number of the week this week was 7 Looking Forward... - Next week provincial assessments start, I will be in the building working with st...

Looking Back... - The letter of the week this week was Cc for candy cane and cookie, using just a piece of paper we learned how to make our own pattern candy canes  - For read aloud we listened to a few different versions of the Gingerbread Man story; ask your student which one was their favourite - After listening to the gingerbread man story, we sequenced how to make a gingerbread cookie from start to finish and labelled it 1-6  - We continued to practice writing letters 3 and 5 as they are a little tricky!  - We made snowmen books and counted up from 1 to 5 on each page, using snowman stickers to represent each number  Looking Forward... - Next week Friday we will be trying small Gingerbread cookies for our intro to the 5 senses, please let me know of any dietary restrictions that would require your student to not participate in the tasting - Friday December 19th is the last day of school before winter break! We are in the final stretch before the holidays and getting festive in the classroom!  Looking Back... - This week we were busy!! We started the week learning the letter Ss for Snowflake, Snowman and Snow - In our journals we drew pictures to represent what we like to do in the snow!! Ask your student what they picked to draw about - In math we worked on subitizing numbers; this is having the ability to instantly recognize a number or set of items without having to count them, like when you look at dice - We also represented the numbers 4 (after reading Pete the Cat's "My Four Groovy Buttons) and 5 (after reading "Five Little Penguins")  - With our buddies we made snowflakes in art, using tape and water colour paints Looking Forward... - A reminder that there are to be NO TOYS at school.
